As the season of Advent begins, I find myself reflecting on how deeply connected we are to family, friends, and the enduring power of hope. This past weekend, Sam, Mike, Tetiana, and I had the honor of lighting the candle of hope at church (Watch it: starting at 9 minutes 23 seconds). It was a simple but profound act that reminded me of the heart of Advent—the anticipation of light breaking into darkness and the promise of renewal.
The Shortest Days, The Brightest Joy As the days grow shorter and the nights longer, this season seems to brim with a unique kind of light. Joy, laughter, and togetherness illuminate these darker days, making them feel warm and full of life. For our family, this time of year is a perfect opportunity to revisit beloved traditions, including rewatching the Harry Potter series and a few favorite Hallmark and Christmas classics. This year, we're planning to add It’s A Wonderful Life to our watchlist. It’s been years since I last saw it, but the timeless themes of gratitude, community, and redemption came up during church recently, sparking my interest. I’m excited to rediscover its message, especially during Advent. Curious About Your Traditions While reflecting on my own traditions, I can’t help but wonder: what brings joy and meaning to your Advent season? Are there family rituals you hold dear or new ones you’re creating? Do you have a favorite movie, meal, or activity that makes this time of year special? For many, Advent is a mix of old and new—lighting candles, opening Advent calendars, gathering with loved ones, and indulging in cozy comforts. These small rituals remind us that even in the busyness of life, there’s space for connection and reflection. I’d love to hear about what makes this season special for you. A Journey Back to Joy There was a time when I struggled to find joy during the holidays. I felt disconnected from the warmth and meaning of the season, weighed down by self-doubt and the belief that Christmas was little more than a consumer-driven spectacle. It was a bleak and isolating mindset. But in the past three years, I’ve rediscovered the joy of Advent by returning to traditions my grandmother taught me and embracing a few new ones shared by friends. From baking familiar holiday treats to decorating with intention and prayer, these simple acts have reignited the light in my heart. They’ve helped me find stability, hope, and gratitude—not just for the season but for life itself. Embracing Forgiveness and Connection Advent is also a season of forgiveness and grace, a time to reflect on our imperfections and seek reconciliation. In my life, I’ve made mistakes—who hasn’t? But I’ve learned not to dwell on them. Through confession and prayer, I’ve found peace in accepting God’s forgiveness, which in turn has allowed me to forgive myself. This kind of forgiveness doesn’t erase the past, but it opens the door to healing and deeper connection. If we could all forgive the way God does—with compassion, understanding, and a willingness to let go—we might find ourselves more united, especially during this season of hope. A Wish for You This Advent As we journey through Advent, my hope is that you, too, find joy in your traditions—both old and new. May this season bring you light, love, and a renewed sense of purpose. Life is fleeting, but it is filled with opportunities to cherish and celebrate with those we love. Whatever your traditions may be, I pray they bring you a sense of peace and connection. Let’s make the most of the time we have, embracing the hope that this season inspires. What are your favorite traditions, and how do they bring joy to your life during Advent? I’d love to hear your thoughts—feel free to share them in the comments below. Wishing you a blessed and joyful Advent season!
