With Christmas less than a week away, I find myself reflecting on the virtue of patience. The holiday season, while filled with joy and celebration, often tests our ability to remain calm and composed. We must be patient while waiting for our gifts, patient with our family and friends, and patient with ourselves as we strive to embody the true spirit of the season.
Biblical Lessons on Patience The Bible offers profound insights into patience as an essential aspect of love and faith. In 1 Corinthians 13:4, we are reminded that “Love is patient and is kind,” highlighting the connection between patience and love. Similarly, Ephesians 4:2 encourages us to “bear with one another in love,” emphasizing the importance of enduring challenges with kindness and understanding. The book of James also teaches us about patience. In James 5:7-8, we are called to “be patient and wait for the Lord’s timing,” just as farmers wait for their crops to grow. These passages not only guide us in our relationships with others but also remind us to trust in God’s plan and timing. Jesus’ life and ministry exemplify patience, offering a model of love and perseverance for us to follow. Why Patience Matters Patience is more than a seasonal virtue; it is a skill that can transform our daily lives. Consider the frustration we feel when stuck in traffic or waiting in long lines. By practicing patience, we develop the ability to remain calm, courteous, and kind, reducing moments of irritation and stress. According to Merriam-Webster, patience is defined as:
While these definitions capture the essence of patience, the Bible and life experiences teach us its deeper, transformative power. Patience allows us to accept the things we cannot change and find peace in the midst of uncertainty. The Serenity Prayer and Biblical Principles The Serenity Prayer, attributed to theologian Reinhold Niebuhr, reflects this wisdom. It asks for serenity to accept what we cannot change, courage to change what we can, and wisdom to know the difference. While not directly from the Bible, the prayer aligns with biblical principles of seeking wisdom, peace, and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Serenity Prayer God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; Enjoying one moment at a time; Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him Forever in the next. Amen. This prayer, like the Bible, encourages us to find joy and strength in God’s presence, even during challenging times. The Temptation of Christmas Curiosity Christmas often tests our patience, especially as we eagerly anticipate opening gifts. The curiosity of wondering what lies beneath the wrapping paper is almost irresistible. For me, this excitement stems from a desire to feel connected to loved ones through their thoughtful choices. Yet, it also provides an opportunity to reflect on the deeper meaning of the holiday—celebrating the birth of Jesus, who brought light and hope into the world. Though December 25 may not be the actual date of Jesus’ birth, it has become a meaningful tradition. This season invites us to focus on His transformative impact and the timeless lessons found in Scripture. Timeless Wisdom from the Bible The Bible, written over centuries, continues to guide and inspire us today. The Old Testament dates back as far as 1500 BC, while the New Testament was written between approximately 45-95 AD. Despite the passage of time, its teachings on relationships, morality, forgiveness, and redemption remain relevant. Some may assume that ancient people lacked knowledge compared to modern society, but exposure to biblical teachings often provided profound insights into ethics, interpersonal relationships, and spiritual growth. Many who could not read or write memorized Scripture, internalizing its wisdom and applying it to their lives. Patience as Spiritual Nourishment Reading and reflecting on the Bible nourishes our spirit, much like food sustains our bodies. You may not remember every passage you read, just as you may not recall last year’s meals, but the spiritual sustenance equips you to face life’s challenges with purpose and grace. During this Christmas season, if you find yourself feeling impatient or restless, take a moment to read and reflect on Scripture. Whether it’s the passages mentioned above or others that resonate with you, let the words of the Bible energize your spirit and guide you. Wishing You Peace and Joy As we celebrate this season of love, hope, and joy, I encourage you to embrace patience—with others, with yourself, and with God’s plan. May the lessons of the Bible and the peace of the Holy Spirit guide you, not just during Christmas but throughout the year. Wishing you and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas and a New Year filled with grace, love, and patience!
